TIMBRE OF THE WALLEY / Nur Barış

This project draws inspiration from a deeply personal moment in Bey Deresi Valley, where a simple glass bottle became a tool of discovery. As the wind blew through the bottle, it produced a unique sound, sparking an exploration of the valley’s natural acoustics and cultural significance. This experience, combined with research into indigenous music and traditional dances of the region, revealed a shared cultural heritage rooted in Greek and Turkish traditions. Reflecting this connection, the project seeks to create a space where sound, movement, and history converge.

The valley’s reflective acoustics became a guiding principle in shaping the design. Using the slope and the concept of sound waves as inspiration, the project integrates spaces that celebrate music and dance while harmonizing with the natural landscape. A small performance stage sits at a strategic location to amplify sound, allowing the valley to act as a natural resonator. To provide accommodation, a series of structures are placed at a distance, connected to the performance area by a wind-activated bridge. The bridge, a key element of the design, generates soothing sounds as wind flows through its structure, creating a unique auditory experience. When silence is desired, the sound can be halted, offering versatility and control over the atmosphere.

The project also incorporates a winter-friendly cave scene, inspired by the natural reverberation properties of caves. This enclosed space offers a warm environment while enhancing the acoustic experience for visitors. A labyrinth, designed to be navigated through sound rather than sight, provides a sensory journey, guiding visitors with music. Additionally, a music experiential area features glass tubes that allow participants to create their own melodies, fostering interaction and creativity. In the accommodations, niches are thoughtfully designed for personal music-making, blending private reflection with artistic expression.

Timbre of the Valley transforms the site into a vibrant cultural hub, where the past and present are intertwined through sound, movement, and space. By embracing the natural and cultural elements of the region, the project fosters a deep sense of connection and belonging for visitors and locals alike.
