RED WEAVEN-IN / Gönül Şevval Erbaş
The Spatial Weaving of a Cultural Memory
The Red Weave-In project consists of eight plug-in modules attached to the existing stone structure of Kayseri Castle. Inspired by traditional Anatolian carpet motifs, each of these modules is designed as a structural narrative unit, symbolizing the meaning of a different motif. The aim is to revive the nearly forgotten carpet culture through a contemporary architectural language.
The plain and flat surface of the castle led to the choice of triangular forms for this design. These triangular forms create a dynamic and striking visual rhythm against the static stone mass and allow each module to define its own character.
The main circulation of the project proceeds from within the castle. A staircase leads only to the reception module, ensuring that all visitors are first welcomed before being integrated into the designed route. Red acetate is used on the surfaces of all modules. The color red was chosen both because it is the most dominant tone in traditional carpets and because it enhances the traceability of circulation. Moreover, through triangular glass openings covered with red acetate on each module’s surface, the circulation path becomes visually followable. Especially in the reception module, the red acetate on the ceiling combines with daylight to create a striking and inviting entrance space.
The circulation route includes the following modules in sequence:
Digital Carpet Museum: A space where visitors can learn about carpet history, symbols, and motifs through digital screens.
Thread Exhibition Module: A spatial experience formed by threads hanging from above and wrapping around the walls.
Carpet Materials Exhibition Area: A module exhibiting traditional weaving tools such as kirkit, looms, combs, and warps.
Workshop Module: A hands-on space where the actual carpet weaving process can be observed.
Storage Module: A support area serving the workshop, accessible only to staff.
Gift Shop: A commercial area offering souvenir items themed around traditional carpets.
Event Space and Design Module: Spaces dedicated to workshops and design activities that allow visitors to engage with carpet culture; these two modules function in tandem.
Carpet Gallery: Located in the central part of the circulation path, this exhibition space brings together all motifs to present the complete narrative of the carpet.
This project is not only an architectural solution but also a narrative that re-weaves memory, culture, and production into space. Red Weave-In is a spatial story that connects past and present, tradition and design, through a red thread.
Red Weave-In: This name is derived from “red”, symbolizing the dominant color of traditional carpets, “weave” referencing the craft of carpet making, and “in” inspired by the inward movement of circulation within the castle.
