The Pin Down / Manal Lakhal

The project “THE PIN DOWN” is conceived as a mixed-use residential development centered around a cooperative social function. At its core is the Intergenerational Digital Craft Hub, a cooperative space where older residents produce traditional handmade crafts while younger participants support them through digital tools, online marketing, and advertising. The project includes workshops, a digital hub, exhibition spaces, and communal areas that allow these crafts to be produced, displayed, and shared with the public. Through exhibitions and shared community spaces, the project strengthens intergenerational exchange, preserves local craft culture, and creates sustainable economic opportunities while fostering social interaction within the neighborhood.

Formally, the project is organized around a strong red cylindrical core that acts as a fixed anchor for circulation, security, and vertical movement. This “pin” connects all programmatic elements and clearly separates public functions from private residential spaces. The building mass is divided into a solid base that houses the cooperative and public programs, and a residential volume above that is rotated toward Mount Ali to maximize sunlight, natural ventilation, and views. This rotation also shapes balconies and terraces, enhancing environmental performance and visual connection with the surroundings while giving the project a dynamic and legible urban presence.

The residential program is composed of four housing typologies designed to respond to different household sizes and user needs:

  • Unit 1 (Studio / 1-Bedroom Unit): Designed for single occupants, students, and elderly residents. The unit includes a sleeping area, living–dining space, kitchenette, bathroom, and a private balcony.
  • Unit 2 (1-Bedroom Unit): Intended for single residents or couples. The unit consists of one bedroom, a living–dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and a balcony.
  • Unit 3 (2-Bedroom Unit): Designed for small families. This unit includes two bedrooms, a living–dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and a balcony.
  • Unit 4 (3-Bedroom Unit): Designed for larger families. The unit comprises three bedrooms, a living–dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and a balcony.

In conclusion, “THE PIN DOWN” is not only a residential project but a social and economic framework. By combining cooperative production, clear formal organization, and flexible housing typologies, the project uses architecture as a tool to promote community engagement, intergenerational collaboration, and urban vitality.
