Concept & Site Strategy: Located on a prominent windy corner site in Talas, this project is defined by its responsiveness to climatic challenges and its ambition to serve as a social anchor for the local community. The primary design strategy utilizes a stepped, terraced massing—reminiscent of a ziggurat form. This geometric stepping serves a dual purpose: it aerodynamically deflects strong prevailing winds to protect the street level and roof terraces, while simultaneously maximizing natural sunlight exposure for the upper levels.

Architectural Form & Materiality: Aesthetically, the project embraces a modern, utilitarian language associated with “Soft Brutalism.” The façade is characterized by a uniform grey texture, resembling smooth concrete or stucco, which grants the building a monolithic and grounded presence. This visual weight is prioritized over ornamentation, focusing instead on pure geometric form. To balance the solidity of the concrete, the design employs two distinct glazing strategies. A vertical central core of floor-to-ceiling curtain walls creates a “lantern” effect, marking the main entrance and vertical circulation. Flanking this core, the wings feature rhythmic, horizontal punched windows, providing necessary privacy for the upper-level functions while maintaining a strong visual order.

Program & Social Hub: While the upper floors provide private accommodation, the ground floor is designed to dissolve the barrier between the building and the neighbourhood. Conceived as a lively social hub, the program features a black-box theatre, a community café, and an acting workshop. These spaces are arranged to foster interaction: visitors can transition from watching a performance in the theatre to discussing it in the café or engaging in creative learning in the workshop. Large storefront windows at street level activate the pedestrian realm, inviting the community inside and turning the building into a stage for social connection.
