As part of this project, we were asked to design an apartment building with a + function. Based on my site analysis, I realized that even though there was a supermarket in the neighborhood, there was no greengrocer where residents could directly access fresh fruit and vegetables. I began to use this idea for my + function. Later, I reinforced this idea with the concept of allowing people from outside the neighborhood to grow their own vegetables. I directed people through the path running between the two blocks of the structure I designed in the backyard, where I created a planting area. Additionally, to create extra space, I covered the pedestrian walkway on the first floor and created an extra area by forming a sloping, irregularly shaped earthen space extending toward the backyard, ensuring circulation from the outside. This way, people coming from outside for the planting workshop could work comfortably outside without getting mixed up in the special circulation inside the buildings. Furthermore, instead of limiting this planting idea to just the backyard and the protruding terrace on the first floor, I integrated it into the building, designing the terraces of each floor’s apartments to be both a small green space where they could grow their own vegetables and fruits and a normal tiled terrace. I landscaped the areas inaccessible from the floors to add greenery. I decided to make the railings out of wood to ensure they blend in with the greenery and nature. I also designed the top floor as a grassy area so that the b uilding’s residents would not have to go to extra distant places for barbecues or picnics.
