CRITICA CENTER/ Amine Betül Karabulut

This project proposes a community-centric educational hub designed for students between the ages of 12 and 18, with the primary aim of fostering critical and analytical thinking through exploration, inquiry, and collaboration. Beyond providing a conventional learning environment, the project seeks to create a dynamic atmosphere that encourages users to question, analyze, and generate innovative ideas through intellectual exploration and adaptable spatial experiences.

The design approach is deeply rooted in the existing urban context. Surrounded by vertically rising apartment blocks, the building adopts a contrasting horizontal character, resembling a “laid-down apartment” that stretches across the site. This gesture establishes a strong relationship with the neighborhood while creating a more approachable and human-scaled environment. Rather than imposing a monumental presence, the project integrates itself into the existing fabric and promotes a sense of belonging within the community.

Spatial organization is based on flexibility and interaction. Transparent circulation corridors connect different programmatic zones, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the building and emphasizing visual continuity between interior and exterior spaces. These glazed connections strengthen the architectural identity while creating bright and inviting learning environments.

The project also aims to blur the boundaries between education and public life. A café that remains open 24/7 acts as a social interface between the school and the neighborhood, encouraging interaction beyond school hours and transforming the building into an active community center. Through this relationship, the educational hub extends its influence beyond students and becomes an inclusive space that supports social engagement and lifelong learning.

By combining contextual sensitivity, adaptable spaces, and public accessibility, the project presents an educational environment that nurtures curiosity, critical inquiry, and intellectual development while strengthening the connection between learning and community.
