PERCEPTARIUM

This project proposes a Multi-Sensory Community Hub in Kayseri, developed through the adaptive reuse and reinterpretation of the site’s historical and cultural context. Inspired by the relationship between human perception and space, the project transforms the public realm from a visually dominated environment into an immersive sensory experience that engages touch, sound, movement, light, texture, and color. Rather than being a space that is merely observed, the architecture is designed to be experienced through bodily interaction and emotional engagement.

The project responds to contemporary urban conditions characterized by visual overload, fast-paced lifestyles, reduced social interaction, and the gradual disconnection between people, heritage, and their surroundings. By introducing moments of slowness, exploration, and sensory awareness, the design encourages visitors to pause, interact, and reconnect with both themselves and the environment. Movement becomes a central design tool, guiding users through a sequence of spatial experiences that unfold gradually and stimulate different senses.

The proposal is rooted in the cultural identity of the site and its surroundings, drawing inspiration from local heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and community life. Existing historical references are reinterpreted through contemporary architectural interventions, creating a dialogue between past and present. The project also addresses the lack of designated spaces for cultural interaction and handicraft activities by providing flexible environments that support learning, production, exhibition, and social exchange.

A network of sensory rooms, interactive learning spaces, workshops, gathering areas, and outdoor public zones creates diverse experiences for different user groups. Carefully selected materials, acoustic conditions, lighting strategies, vegetation, and spatial proportions shape atmosphere and perception, influencing mood, orientation, and emotional well-being. Sound contributes to the acoustic identity of spaces, while texture, color, and natural elements strengthen the connection between the body and the environment.

Beyond its sensory dimension, the project functions as a social and cultural catalyst. It supports local artisans, promotes community participation, and creates opportunities for cultural exchange between residents and visitors. Through workshops, exhibitions, educational programs, and informal gathering spaces, the project strengthens social connections while preserving and celebrating local identity.

Ultimately, the Multi-Sensory Community Hub redefines architecture as a living framework for experience, memory, and interaction. By merging sensory design, cultural heritage, and community engagement, the project creates an inclusive and emotionally meaningful environment that fosters a deeper relationship between people, place, and the collective urban experience of Kayseri.
