Liminal Textures: Suturing the Urban Split
- Project Overview & Site Diagnosis:Urban environments frequently suffer from spatial fragmentation caused by rapid vehicular expansion, infrastructure barriers, or historical divides. ‘Liminal Textures: Suturing the Urban Split’ addresses this critical urban dichotomy located between the historic Cumhuriyet Quarter and Tacettin Veli Neighborhood in Kayseri. Re-conceptualizing this central urban rupture not as an insurmountable barrier, but as a liminal threshold—a fertile ground for civic integration—the design shifts the paradigm from spatial isolation to continuous pedestrian connectivity. Inspired by iconic public corridors such as La Rambla in Barcelona, the project establishes a dynamic urban spine that bridges historic heritage with modern civic life.
- Strategic Interventions: Five Urban Stitches :To repair the urban tissue between Cumhuriyet and Tacettin Veli, the proposal deploys a multi-layered design methodology organized into five distinct typological ‘stitches’, operating across micro and macro scales:
- T1 – Linear Stitch (Green Corridor): Establishes a continuous, pedestrian-centric ecological corridor connecting Tacettin Veli and Cumhuriyet, enhancing urban biodiversity and walkable accessibility.
- T2 – Programmatic Stitch (Hub): Introduces civic, cultural, and commercial nodes that activate the urban spine, fostering socio-economic interaction throughout the day.
- T3 – Memory Stitch (Traces): Respects and preserves the rich historical footprints of the area, integrating collective local memory into contemporary public spaces.
- T4 – Spatial Stitch: Reconfigures ground-level topography and multi-layered circulation paths to dissolve vehicular-pedestrian conflicts and ensure smooth spatial transitions.
- T5 – Visual Stitch (Framing Pavilions): Utilizes architectural framing pavilions and sightlines to highlight key local heritage structures, establishing visual coherence across the urban seam.
- Impact and Synthesis :By weaving together ecological landscape, heritage preservation, and modern public programming, ‘Liminal Textures’ transforms the spatial divide between Cumhuriyet and Tacettin Veli into a vibrant, unified public realm. The project demonstrates how tactical micro-scale typologies can heal major urban splits and foster a resilient community ecosystem in Kayseri.
