Maraş Biennial

Maraş Biennial-Fatma Nur Karadoğu

This project was designed by focusing on Kahramanmaraş’s cultural layers, geographical memory and strong ties with the public. The basic approach of the biennial is to go beyond an exhibition concept that is disconnected from the public and appeals only to art circles, and to create a structural structure that integrates with local life and opens up space for genuine and daily experiences.

It was designed as a contemporary public structure that carries the spirit of the biennial, inspired by the historical memory, geographical identity and daily life culture of Kahramanmaraş. The main goal of the biennial, which is to create “an art environment that integrates with the public, is genuine and open to experience”, has been the main reference point in the spatial structure of the structure.

Believing that the biennial should host a process where art is not only exhibited but also produced, shared and transformed; the structure has been designed as a permeable platform that blurs the boundaries between the audience and the artist, the local and the universal, the daily and the aesthetic. In this context, the structure offers a flexible ground that allows for a wide range of activities such as exhibitions, performances, workshops and open forums throughout the biennial.

In the design, Kahramanmaraş’s transitive geographical structure and the plateau tradition are interpreted with the principles of spatial continuity and openness. Open and semi-open spaces allow the public to meet with the biennial events without interrupting their daily circulation. Thus, the structure becomes a part of the biennial’s dialogue with the city, not an isolated art space.

By foreseeing a continuous use for the post-biennial, the structure is not only considered a temporary exhibition area, but also a permanent meeting point that adds cultural and social value to the city.
