Urban Echo+

Urban Echo+ / Buse Nur Kaya

This project proposes the design of an Urban Innovation Hub located in Kahramanmaraş, on a 25,000 m² site characterized by a gentle north-to-south slope of approximately 2 meters. The design is situated around the existing Necip Fazıl Kısakürek Cultural Center, whose east and west wings will be preserved. The central part of the building will be transformed by introducing a north-south void that functions as a wind corridor and circulation spine, enhancing passive ventilation and connectivity across the site.

The Urban Innovation Hub is envisioned as a hybrid space that brings together citizens, urban designers, and planners. It aims to provide support for individuals seeking guidance on urban planning topics, while also hosting professional events such as panels and workshops featuring urbanists and city-makers. Beyond formal functions, the hub integrates daily-life experiences through public-facing components like a community garden and an XR-based landscape experience zone. These spaces are intended to attract local residents and foster regular interaction between professional and public users.

The existing 8000 m² building footprint will be maintained, but with a revised spatial program: certain outdated or underused units will be removed and replaced with new spaces that align with the goals of innovation, accessibility, and collaboration. The new architectural language emphasizes open and semi-open configurations, shaded outdoor extensions, and flexible interior modules to support a variety of creative and civic activities.

The design responds to Kahramanmaraş’s hot climate by integrating passive design strategies such as natural airflow, daylight control, and shaded public areas. The project ultimately repositions the cultural center as a dynamic civic interface—serving not only as a cultural landmark but also as a catalyst for inclusive urban dialogue and innovation.
