Media Lab / Betül Yekrek

When Kayseri studies the urban context and morphological development in which it is located, it is observed that it is shaped around several determinants. These are geographical determinants (Mount Erciyes, deep valleys) and spatial determinants (Kayseri castle, cisterns, tombs). Accordingly, the city has created its spatial determinants every period, has continued to develop cumulatively, and has become a palimpsest city because it continues to expand by adding new ones without erasing existing traces.  In this context, when asked where the project area is in this context, it has the property of being a palimpsest for the city again. Although it was made by the development needs of the period, it has largely lost its functionality and importance over time, it is of great importance for development.

Being aware of all this, the structure proposed for the area works as a ‘Media Lab’ that is integrated into the school, fed by the school, and feeds the school. The main purpose of design is to preserve the existing and transform it into today’s needs. The structure determines a theme before each semester. Various panels where participants are trained around this theme, studio works are developed, business partnerships are made, companies’ industry-based software is developed, game arts are produced and works based on machine learning such as autonomous systems are produced as a structure. Working together with this context, rentable offices in the auditorium structure outside the main studio structures, such as ‘visual design and creative coding,’ increase the diversity of users in this context by offering office, and studio uses for those who run their businesses and allow creating a network between the profiles of people who come there.
