Furniture Hub / Asya Gizem Gürbulak

The Furniture Art and Craft Hub is an architectural project located near a vocational and technical high school in Kayseri, Turkey. The concept stems from the observation of a significant gender imbalance in vocational education, where girls are underrepresented. Inspired by the historical context of vocational education for girls throughout the history -partially during the early Republican era in Turkey- this project seeks to create a space that not only integrates girls into the design process but also empowers them through hands-on learning in furniture design and home accessories.

The hub focuses on producing art-inspired, non-mass-produced furniture pieces and home accessories, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. It will serve as both a creative workshop and an exhibition space, showcasing unique designs to the public. By aligning with the high school’s existing courses in metallurgy and woodworking, the hub fosters collaboration between students and local artisans, ensuring relevance to the community while encouraging inclusivity. This initiative aims to revitalize the craft culture, engage girls in vocational education, and promote sustainable, small-scale production with a focus on artistry and quality. The Furniture Art and Craft Hub stands as a bridge between tradition and modernity, fostering creativity, diversity, and empowerment.
