CAVERNOUS / Furkan Yazıcı

My project explores the profound relationship between people and their environment, drawing inspiration from Heidegger’s concept of dwelling. It aims to create a holistic living experience where visitors are not merely passive observers but active participants in an integrated interaction with the environment. At its core, the project embraces the unique geological and cultural heritage of Mustafapaşa, particularly its iconic cave structures, transforming them into vibrant spaces for both experimental and experiential use.

The caves of Sinasos, historically significant and architecturally fascinating, serve as the foundation of this design. These underground formations are revitalized to function as dual-purpose spaces: as experimental zones for creative exploration and as intimate dwellings where visitors can reconnect with themselves and their surroundings. The design weaves rehabilitation, dwelling, museum, and production processes into a cohesive experience that fosters environmental awareness and cultural appreciation.

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the timelessness of the caves, where the natural textures of the earth and the interplay of light and shadow evoke a profound connection to nature. These spaces are curated to stimulate the senses and encourage tactile engagement with local materials and traditional methods. By transforming the caves into active laboratories of creativity and sustainability, the project pays homage to the region’s history while innovating for the future.

Through the integration of these caves, the project fosters a deep sense of belonging. It connects individuals to the land, allowing them to experience the past while imagining new possibilities for human-environment interaction. Ultimately, the design seeks to create a sanctuary that is both rooted in the cultural memory of Mustafapaşa and open to reinterpretation, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to dwell, explore, and belong
