LOOP / Merve Nur Ülker

This project focuses on the stories and emotions of the population exchange period that shaped the cultural identity of MustafaPaşa. It aims to reflect the journey experiences and feelings of those who went through the exchange process into the space. The emotions of people leaving their long-lived homelands, such as joy, sorrow, fatigue, and adaptation, are intertwined with the events they experienced along the way.

The core concept of the design is the “loop”,  symbolizing the cycle of life and death. Many individuals lost their lives during the journey, while others embraced new beginnings in a new homeland. At the heart of the project, the Maraşoğlu Bridge serves as a symbol connecting two cultures. The bridge is linked to Greek mythology, representing the cycle of life and death. The Tree of Life, a symbol from Turkish mythology, is also integrated into the design, blending with the bridge and the flowing water to convey a cohesive narrative.

The structure consists entirely of ramps, providing uninterrupted transitions between exhibition areas. These spaces reflect the stories of people involved in the population exchange, incorporating accommodation units within the exhibitions to connect them to these narratives. Emotional zones allow visitors to experience feelings of despair, fear, confinement, and hope. Additionally, a submerged area on the lower floor evokes a sense of drowning and entrapment. This area ultimately leads to an open square featuring the Tree of Life, symbolizing the relief and joy of reaching one’s homeland. The square represents a space of comfort and celebration, reflecting the serenity of arrival.
