RUPTURE / Hande Çadırcı
Breaking to Connect
This project began with a simple question that kept echoing in my mind: What happens
when spaces break apart? Through this idea, I started exploring “rupture” not as
destruction, but as a method of generating new spatial relationships — a kind of
architectural choreography born from separation.
The early stages of the design were filled with instinctive gestures — sketching
fragmented forms, slicing planes, and imagining how people might move through
broken, tilted spaces. I was drawn to the idea of tension: how architectural elements
could lean, pull, or even collide to create meaningful experiences. This led me to
develop a layout composed of angular, wedge-like volumes that fan out from a central
axis, each holding different exhibition themes. Their disjointed alignment creates a
sense of disorientation at first, but also invites curiosity and exploration.
One of the most exciting parts of the process was designing the ramps which gives itself
a circulation — a light, linear element that floats above the heavy fractured forms
below. It became not just a circulation path, but a space for reflection, openness, and
connection. This moment of lightness against mass felt like the emotional resolution of
the project.
Material choices, such as raw concrete and warm interior textures, were carefully
selected to strengthen the contrast between rupture and calm. I tried to let the
landscape flow between the buildings, allowing the outside to soften the hardness of
the architecture.
“Rupture” became, for me, a personal experiment in embracing disconnection — and
transforming it into a spatial narrative that is bold, layered, and open to interpretation.
