CRAFTING THROUGH STONE / Zainab Asıf
The crafting through stone project reimagines the interface between history and contemporary life by transforming a historical shield into a dynamic learning and social experience. Located at the heart of Kayseri, the design stands as a statement to the arts of not only this small city but the whole Türkiye. This project does not attempt to overshadow the monument, but to converse with it. The concept of the module was derived from this symbolism of art being wrapped around Kayseri like a ribbon which led me to choose an organic form for the module.
The proposed modular design approach integrates flexible units that host workshops, cafes, exhibition areas and picnic areas. The closed spaces consist of the café which also has protruding balconies providing space for fresh air. This consistency is observed in exhibition areas as well as in the pottery workshops. This is so that the people in space do not feel claustrophobic. The live concert and picnic area are comprised of two units based on elevation differences and are located at the inside of the castle wall. The modules are access through the pathway that is on the wall of the castle serving as an integrated spine.
The aura of the project is one of respect, curiosity and parasitic. The modules cluster around the castle as though a ribbon of arts and craftsmanship is wrapped around the castle. Fostering a sense of community without enclosing or overwhelming the site. The use of glass and metals as materials gives way to the interaction between the outside world and the inside. Furthermore, the glass being smart ensures that privacy and experience remain intact.
Narrative
The experience in the modules begins with a soft glow of daylight coming through the walls of the exhibition area. The unit hums with activity as one person enjoys the wind and sunlight on the balcony, cigar in one hand while facing the other. The door creaks as more people come inside the unit from the route located inside the wall of the castle. As the sun sets, the castles shadows stretch across the open plaza, and the modules hums from within- a testament to how the past and present can coexist, not in competition, but in mutual enrichment.
