MONOSOLARİS

Monosolaris is a speculative city inspired by Eusapia from Invisible Cities, where life is perceived not through visible boundaries but through invisible systems and thresholds. In Eusapia, urban life is sustained through the coexistence of different realms. Similarly, Monosolaris is structured around a single sun, which functions as the city’s only source of energy and life. The city is not defined by dwellings or monumental buildings, but by an infrastructural system that governs light, movement, and maintenance. The inhabitants of Monosolaris, known as Sunkeep creatures, can only exist through light. For this reason, the city is organized as a vertical energy route connecting the sun to the lower city. This route consists of open, semi-open, and enclosed spaces, creating a gradual transition from light to darkness. Lamps embedded along the path are activated when the creature passes through, while previously lit areas gradually fade into darkness, enabling energy conservation. Mechanisms positioned along the route regulate access and light flow, prioritizing efficiency over permanence. The daily routine of a Sunkeep creature is centered on maintaining this system. The creature begins its journey by collecting energy from the sun and moves downward along the route, activating specific mechanisms along the way to ensure continuity. In the lower city, it enters the broken-lamp storage and oil storage areas, replaces damaged lamps, and collects oil for maintenance. As it ascends back along the same path, the creature oils the mechanisms and checks their operation. The journey ends near the sun, where the creature rests before the cycle begins again. In Monosolaris, everyday life is not organized around dwelling, but around sustaining the delicate balance between light, maintenance, and survival.
