Between Life and Production** is an individual housing project with the theme *Housing+*, conducted within the ARCH201 Architectural Design studio during the Fall 2025–2026 semester. The project aims to approach housing not only as a private living space but as a multi-layered spatial structure with potential for production, interaction, and sharing. In this regard, the “plus” function has been integrated into the design as an integral part of the housing program.
The project site is located in the Kiçiköy neighborhood of Talas district in Kayseri. Its proximity to Old Talas, its strong neighborhood culture, and its relationship with Talas Millet Park make the area a socially active and vibrant context. This social environment has been the most important data shaping the project’s fundamental design decisions. During the design process, the aim was to develop a housing model that supports socialization at the neighborhood scale and nourishes public life.
The main idea of the project is to separate the housing units from the art workshops defined as the “plus” function, while establishing a public connection between these two programs. This connection is created through an axis extending between the two blocks, which users can experience like a street. This axis is not merely a passageway; it is conceived as a shared space where encounters, production, and everyday social interaction take place. This linear movement is integrated with the amorphous mass language that defines the building’s overall form, aiming for a more fluid and inviting spatial experience.
The facade design combines vertical wooden panels and glass surfaces to achieve a natural, warm, and transparent character. While the wooden panels provide privacy and rhythm, the glass surfaces strengthen the visual relationship between the interior and the surroundings. The prominent amorphous balconies on the facade have become one of the building’s characteristic elements, adding dynamism to the mass and offering users flexible, semi-open living spaces.
The project’s strongest aspect is its integration of a public axis concept with residential typology and its ability to reflect this concept consistently, both spatially and formally. *Between Life and Production* proposes an alternative residential approach that brings together life and production, strengthening social interaction at the neighborhood scale.
