SYNCRASIS / DERYA KIZILAY
Syncrasis is envisioned as a transformative urban hub in Sivas, a city where social life has historically been confined to specific functions like theater, concerts, or dining within historic structures. Responding to the city’s critical need for a new and inclusive public center, the project reinterprets Sivas’s deep-rooted culture and craft traditions through the lens of contemporary technology. Syncrasis serves not merely as a building, but as a living urban platform where the memory of the past enters into a dialogue with the possibilities of the future.
Architecturally, the project rejects the typical monolithic municipal building typology. Instead, it creates a fragmented composition by dividing the program into permeable volumes such as the Vision & Venture Building, Memory & Design Building, and the Children’s Center. This strategic fragmentation generates a network of courtyards and interstitial spaces that invite citizens inside, blurring the boundaries between the street and the institution.
One of the key layers shaping the architectural identity of the design is the unique building envelope. Inspired by local patterns and traditional craftsmanship, this façade utilizes a parametric, “pixelated” texture that filters light and adds visual depth to the structure. This “digital craft” approach acts as a bridge between Sivas’s past and its modern aspirations. In the interior, the use of warm materials like wood in the grand staircases and circulation areas creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages users to pause and engage in social interaction.
By intertwining strict municipal functions with flexible social spaces, Syncrasis democratizes the city center. It offers a ground where citizens can connect, create, and share, ultimately establishing a “living urban core” that synchronizes the bureaucratic with the social, and the traditional with the innovative.
