Cinematic Threshold – A Social Media & Living Interface  / Nurefşan Umdu

“The Cinematic Threshold” is a design proposal that seeks to redefine the traditional boundary between the private sanctuary of a home and the vibrant energy of public urban life. Located at the strategic edge of Talas Nation’s Garden, the project acts as a “thematic threshold,” navigating the transition between high-density urban movement and the serenity of the park. The core philosophy of the project is to treat the residence not as an isolated box, but as a social interface—a lens through which residents can experience the cinematic qualities of their environment.

The design logic is driven by a dual structural grid system. This approach allows for the intentional separation of two distinct functions: the private residential modules and the public “Media Hub.” By splitting these programs, a central plaza is naturally generated at the heart of the site. This plaza serves as a cultural magnet for the neighborhood, bridging the gap between domesticity and urban life while acting as a welcoming gateway to the park.

The programmatic distribution is carefully balanced across a total gross area of approximately 1300 m².

  • Modular Housing: Includes a diverse mix of 3+1 units (420 m²), 2+1 units (300 m²), and 1+1 units (210 m²) to cater to a demographic variety.
  • Media Hub: A 190 m² space (with an additional 180 m² for circulation) dedicated to a cinema and conference halls, providing a public platform for cultural exchange.

The building’s form directly responds to the site’s natural rhythms. By aligning with the sun and wind patterns of Talas, the design ensures that every unit remains bright and naturally ventilated. To protect the residential peace, the “Media Hub” is placed along the busier edges, acting as a buffer that shields the inner courtyard from urban noise. Combined with warm, textured materials, the structure blends effortlessly into the park’s landscape.

Ultimately, “The Cinematic Threshold” offers a fresh model for collective living. It creates a space where private life and public culture coexist, honoring the individual’s need for privacy while fostering a meaningful sense of community.
