In this design, the deep traces left by the Greek and Turkish population exchange in the region’s past and the intertwined structure of these two cultures formed the concept of my project. In this context, the “Interweave” concept I chose represents both cultural and physical integration. While combining the natural rock formations in the region with modern structures, I created spatial and functional integrity by taking inspiration from the interaction of the two cultures.

In the design process, I started with two large masses while determining the main building forms and created three main buildings by removing some parts from these masses. While the two of these buildings serve more public functions (e.g. workshops and a restaurant), the third structure offers a more private and calm usage area. At the same time, I ensured a natural separation of public and private spaces by placing some of the structures on both sides of the road. This layout allowed the space to serve different user groups while preserving the overall balance of the design.

In the building program, I designed workshops that offer the opportunity to experience local handicrafts such as carpet weaving and pottery. In addition, I designed a museum to emphasize the historical importance of Mustafapaşa. This museum offers visitors the opportunity to get to know the effects of the population exchange, the lifestyles of the two cultures, and the history of the region more closely. In addition, I also added a restaurant that allows visitors to experience cultural diversity with serving flavors specific to Turkish and Greek cuisine. I added stone seating areas, connected small squares, and green open spaces to bring users together with a relaxing atmosphere in the area. In the landscape layout, pedestrian paths and natural textured floor coverings were carefully designed to allow users to move around the space smoothly. These paths also create spaces for social interaction, encouraging visitors to connect and the space.

In the end, this project aims to provide a meaningful experience for both locals and visitors. By creating a project that reflects the spirit of Mustafapaşa and allows users to experience this culture, I ensured that the space tells both a historical and contemporary story.<span
