TILEQUEST \/ Nesli G\u00fcne\u015f<\/h3>\n

\nQuesttile: In Search of the Tile
\nQuesttile is a modular architectural installation designed within and atop the historic
\nKayseri Castle. Rooted in the conceptual journey of rediscovering Turkish tile-making,
\nthe project name blends \u201cquest\u201d and \u201ctile,\u201d reflecting a spatial narrative of both cultural
\nproduction and exploration.
\nThe architectural language is shaped through modularity: various functions evolve from
\na base geometric logic. Rather than repeating a single module, the design transforms
\nand repositions units derived from a basic trapezoidal idea. These modules adapt to
\nfunctional needs and contextual orientation, creating diverse spatial experiences while
\nmaintaining geometric harmony.
\nFunctions are divided along a zigzagging circulation, unfolding across both the castle\u2019s
\nwalls and courtyard. Each module corresponds to a specific stage in tile-making:
\nmaterial collection, workshop, painting, firing, exhibition, waiting, caf\u00e9, information, and
\nsales. This sequence allows visitors not only to observe but also to experience the
\nstages of craftsmanship firsthand.
\nTwo main staircases embedded within the castle\u2019s towers support this experience. One
\nstaircase, located near the workshop, guides those who want to create tiles through the
\nfull process\u2014from material pickup to making, firing, and painting. The other staircase,
\nmore oriented toward tourists, leads to the information point and a shop where tile based products like decorative plates and artworks are sold. Although these stairs serve
\ndistinct purposes, all modules are functionally interconnected, allowing flexible
\nmovement between them.
\nA waiting area is located within a tower adjacent to the exhibition space, offering a
\ndedicated pause zone for artisans while waiting for their works to be removed from
\nthe kiln. The modules themselves are positioned according to function, scale, and
\ncontext, with all units diagonally linked to form a dynamic yet coherent spatial network.
\nThis modular strategy redefines Kayseri Castle as a living cultural venue rather than a
\nstatic monument. By reactivating underutilized interior spaces, Questtile breathes new
\nlife into the fortress, making it a site of continuity, craftsmanship, and contemporary
\narchitectural clarity.
