Positioned between significant historical landmarks and vibrant commercial corridors, the project aims to reconnect fragmented urban layers and transform the area into an active public destination.

The concept originates from the historical evolution of courtyards in Anatolian cities. From fortified courtyards and castle precincts to caravanserais and traditional hans, courtyards have long served as places of gathering, exchange, and collective memory. The Catalyst Courtyard reinterprets this heritage through a contemporary architectural language, creating a space where history, culture, and everyday urban life converge.

Rather than functioning merely as a transitional passage, the courtyard becomes a catalyst that encourages encounter, interaction, and participation. Historical remnants preserved on the site are integrated into the spatial experience, allowing visitors to engage directly with the city’s layered past. Elevated walkways, viewing platforms, and transparent surfaces create visual and physical connections between archaeological remains and contemporary public activities.

The project introduces a diverse program that supports civic engagement and cultural production. Public assembly spaces, exhibition areas, workshops, co-working environments, educational facilities, and social gathering spaces are organized around the courtyard, generating a dynamic environment that remains active throughout the day. The permeability of the ground level and the strategic positioning of entrances strengthen connections with surrounding urban networks and invite users from different age groups and backgrounds.

The Catalyst Courtyard ultimately seeks to transform passive urban flows into meaningful experiences. By activating historical memory and fostering social interaction, the project establishes a new civic core for Kayseri one that celebrates its rich heritage while responding to the evolving needs of contemporary urban life.

THE CATALYST COURTYARD The Catalyst Courtyard is envisioned as a civic and cultural interface located within the historic center of Kayseri.
