The project emerges from the idea of the “void” as both a physical and conceptual space, a space that preserves memory while creating opportunities for new social interactions. Rather than treating the archaeological remains of the former madrasa site as isolated artifacts, the design integrates them into everyday public life, transforming the site into an active cultural landscape.

The project aims to establish a dialogue between past and present by carefully positioning architectural interventions around the historical remains. The void becomes a medium through which visitors can observe, experience, and reflect on the site’s historical layers. Elevated platforms, public circulation routes, and gathering spaces allow users to engage with the archaeological heritage without disturbing it, ensuring both preservation and accessibility.

Gastro-Void combines gastronomy, education, culture, and public engagement within a single civic framework. Conceived as a contemporary third space, the project provides an inclusive environment beyond home and work where people can gather, learn, interact, and build social connections. The program includes culinary workshops, tasting areas, learning environments, social gathering areas, and public event spaces that encourage interaction between residents, visitors, students, and professionals. Through these functions, gastronomy becomes more than a culinary activity; it becomes a cultural tool that connects people to local traditions, regional identity, and collective memory.

The architectural language emphasizes lightness, transparency, and respect for the existing context. Contemporary structural elements hover above and around the archaeological remains, creating a clear distinction between old and new while maintaining a strong visual relationship between them. As a result, Gastro-Void becomes a place where heritage is not merely displayed but actively experienced. The project redefines the relationship between archaeology and urban life, creating a vibrant civic destination that celebrates Kayseri’s cultural legacy while supporting contemporary social and cultural activities.

GASTRO-VOID Gastro-Void is a contemporary civic core and public gastronomy center located within a historically significant urban context in Kayseri.
