Located near Camikebir in the historic center of Kayseri, the project responds to an urban environment characterized by intense pedestrian movement, strong commercial activity, and the coexistence of diverse social groups. While the area naturally generates frequent encounters, these interactions often remain temporary and transactional. CoLab seeks to extend these moments into meaningful experiences that strengthen civic life.

The project is organized around the idea that belonging is not imposed by architecture but can emerge through participation. At the heart of the proposal, the Idea Hub creates a space for gathering, discussion, and informal civic engagement. Positioned around the revealed madrasa remains, stepped seating areas encourage people to pause, interact, and exchange ideas within a shared public setting.

The main building supports this process through a layered spatial organization. Lower levels accommodate collaborative study and research spaces that encourage knowledge exchange and collective exploration. As users move upward, seminar rooms and production workshops provide opportunities to transform ideas into tangible outcomes. In partnership with the Kayseri Olgunlaşma Enstitüsü, CoLab also promotes the reinterpretation of traditional crafts through contemporary technologies, connecting cultural memory with present-day modes of production.

Rather than functioning as a single-purpose institution, CoLab operates as a contemporary third place where learning, making, and social interaction intersect. By creating opportunities for repeated use, informal encounters, and collective participation, the project aims to foster stronger relationships between individuals, culture, and the city. Ultimately, CoLab proposes a new civic environment where people do not simply pass through but actively contribute to the production of shared urban life.

COLAB CoLab is a civic platform designed to transform everyday encounters into collective learning, production, and belonging.
