Situated in the heart of Kayseri, in close proximity to Cumhuriyet Square\u2014the city’s most vital gathering point and the central hub of its entire public transportation network\u2014Kayseri Civic Core introduces an innovative and contemporary intervention to the historical fabric. Occupying a strategic node adjacent to the Camikebir Mosque, the site inherently possesses exceptional potential for high user density and vibrant public engagement. However, despite this strong potential, this critical area\u2014encircled by prominent Seljuk-era landmarks\u2014has suffered from severe physical and sociodemographic stagnation for many years.
\nUrban Freeze and Sociodemographic Analysis
\nThe fundamental starting point of the project is to produce a spatial response to the phenomenon of “Urban Freeze” identified in the area. Historical map analyses reveal that the existing building footprints and street layouts have remained virtually unaltered since the early 1900s. This paralysis is not merely a physical state; the demographic profile of the user groups has also remained unchanged for years. Today, the space is heavily dominated by middle-aged men who visit the area primarily for trade and worship, leaving the city’s dynamic youth population completely outside this historical center. New User Integration
\nKayseri Civic Core aims to initiate an “Urban Thaw” process to break this deeply rooted cycle of stagnation. The primary strategy of the project centers on integrating the youth as a vital secondary user group into the area. Accordingly, a modern incubation center has been designed to attract Kayseri’s young entrepreneurs, designers, and students. This center is supported by dynamic public workspaces, exhibition areas, cafes, and workshops to retain the youth population within the site. Formed with innovative materials, this contemporary architectural intervention deliberately spills over into the adjacent streets, acting as a catalyst to revitalize the surrounding urban fabric. Context
\nIn terms of spatial planning, the project strictly rejects the standard north-south axis impositions typical in urban design. Instead, the main backbone of the design deliberately aligns itself with the structural axes of the madrasa ruins, which play a defining role throughout the site. This orientation establishes a direct architectural dialogue with the historical heritage, harmoniously blending the traces of the past with the functional needs of the present to organically shape the building’s overall form, massing, and interior spatial arrangement.<\/p>\n
