Desciription:
The first semester design studio is characterized by design investigations that are developed through thinking, experiencing, and making. We use our personal and social environments as learning and experiencing platforms to explore different natural phenomena and different spatial constructs, thoughts, and visions. In the light of this basic methodological introduction, this course also aims to question what students have learned before and sharpen their minds about themselves and their environment restricted by a result of a set of cultural codes and biases based on taxonomic hierarchical nature of knowledge. In this manner, this course aims students to explore their inner and outer environment and their body as an intersection between those two. By doing that the cultural codes and preconditions on those adjectives will become a subject of questioning.
Design in Studio:
Work in the studio will be built sequentially. Therefore, your commitment to incremental development on a daily basis is of paramount importance. The demanding nature and pace of this studio course necessitates your regular attendance and requires deadlines to be consistently met. In addition to lowering your grade, late work will prevent you from following the overall structure of the course. It is important that you take the advantage of the studio environment. You have been given a studio space; please use it. Magnification of your development as a designer is made possible by the collective nature of the studio. Working in studio, instead of at home/dormitory, will allow you to participate in the dialog fostered by the studio setting. Group reviews are collective for a reason, as each of you has something to gain from your peers.
Therefore, attendance in studio and for the duration of all formal reviews is mandatory. This is a 12-hour course and there are several design exercises to be conducted during the timespan of the studio. The length and difficulty level of the exercises may vary, but it is important to submit them before the deadline through given online destinations. A brief handout would be provided to explain you details about each activity. Please make sure that you read it thoroughly before starting.
