TRANSPORTATION HUB AS THIRD SPACE / GÜLŞAH YEŞİLDAL

This project explores the idea of the transportation hub as a contemporary third space within the urban center of Kayseri. Rather than treating transportation as a purely functional system, the proposal investigates how mobility networks, public life, commercial activity, and historical layers can be integrated into a single architectural experience. The site occupies a strategic location where the Kayseri Castle, underground bazaar, public squares, tram routes, bus connections, and future rail infrastructure intersect.

The design approach is based on the concepts of urban node, vertical continuity, and typology-with-a-twist. Existing transportation systems are reinterpreted as opportunities for social interaction, encounter, and public engagement. The project creates a continuous spatial sequence that connects underground and surface levels, transforming circulation routes into active places where people can meet, rest, observe, and participate in urban life.

A major focus of the proposal is the relationship between the historical character of Kayseri and contemporary urban demands. Instead of competing with the surrounding heritage, the design establishes visual and physical connections that reinforce the identity of the site. Public voids, plazas, circulation corridors, and waiting areas are treated as equally important architectural elements alongside enclosed programmatic spaces.

Environmental responsiveness also plays a significant role in the project. Kayseri’s hot summers and cold winters are addressed through material selection, shading strategies, thermal mass, and carefully controlled transitions between interior and exterior environments. These decisions contribute to user comfort while supporting sustainable design principles.

Ultimately, the project aims to demonstrate how transportation infrastructure can become more than a point of transfer. By combining movement, public space, commerce, and cultural continuity, the proposal transforms the transportation hub into a vibrant urban destination that actively contributes to everyday life and strengthens the relationship between architecture and the city.
