BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES / Ayşegül ATAK
This project is conceived as an experiential museum located within the dense, layered, and constantly active urban context of Beşiktaş, aiming to explore how individuals encounter, negotiate, and transcend boundaries throughout their lives. The museum is structured around five main exhibition buildings that represent key stages of human development: family, school, friendship, working life, and media. Each exhibition functions not only as a content-driven space but also as a distinct spatial experience, defined by its scale, enclosure, and atmospheric qualities. Between these exhibition buildings, interstitial “espas” spaces are introduced as transitional zones that allow visitors to pause, reflect, and recalibrate before moving on to the next stage. The architectural shell responds directly to this spatial narrative through its varying height and form; lower and more permeable sections correspond to espas spaces that encourage social interaction and openness, while higher volumes define the exhibition spaces where more intense and immersive experiences occur. Visitors follow a linear yet fragmented sequence beginning at the entrance foyer, progressing through each life stage in a deliberate order. This circulation strategy transforms movement into a narrative journey, where each transition acts as a physical and psychological threshold. The espas spaces prevent a continuous, monotonous flow and instead heighten spatial awareness by creating moments of contrast and interruption. Rather than functioning as a conventional museum that is only observed, the project offers an embodied spatial narrative in which visitors confront their own memories, social roles, and personal limits. Through this experiential structure, the museum encourages self-reflection and awareness, positioning architecture as an active medium for questioning and surpassing boundaries. Ultimately, the project establishes itself as a public experiential landscape within Beşiktaş, offering a space for individual introspection and transformation embedded within the city’s intense urban fabric.
