Course Explanation:
ARCH 501 Studio 1 aims to establish a unique research and design laboratory environment that addresses the spatial and social layers of cities. In this context, the studio process is structured in three phases, encompassing research, critique, and interpretation, addressing the past, present, and future of the study area. The study area has been defined as Kayseri city centre and six neighbourhoods located within the centre (Cumhuriyet, Hunat, Sahabiye, Tacettin Veli, Gevher Nesibe, and Güllük Neighbourhoods). Students will work in groups in the neighbourhoods based on their numbers. The first phase of the studio will focus on the theoretical and conceptual base of the studio, examining the anatomy of urban memory and space. Each group will research the living and/or lost social and spatial dimensions of the neighbourhood they are working on. In the second phase, the city’s current dynamics will be explored and a past-present dialectic will be established. At the final phase, all analyses and critiques will be transformed into sociospatial projections. Students will propose not only a physical proposal for the neighbourhood, but also a socio-spatial life concept. Each student’s relationship with their own neighbourhood and Cumhuriyet Square will also be examined. Valued researchers and academics conducting studies on the city will participate in the course and contribute to it.
