UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY/ Nehir DOĞAN
This project is conceived as an experiential museum that reveals human diversity through empathy and awareness, drawing from Istanbul’s layered social structure. In a city where different individuals coexist yet rarely encounter each other’s living conditions, the museum represents these experiences not through narrative display, but through bodily and sensory engagement. The project aims to foster social awareness by encouraging visitors to feel rather than simply learn.
The museum invites visitors into a non-linear circulation defined by continuous ramps. Along this route, experiential rooms introduce different human conditions related to hearing, vision, mobility, perception of time, and psychological states. Elements such as silence, darkness, slowness, uncertainty, and physical limitation are employed as spatial tools. These experiences are designed to be optional rather than imposed, allowing visitors to define their own limits of participation.
Inclusive design is placed at the core of the project. Instead of assuming a single, average user, the design begins with the acknowledgment of diverse bodies, perceptions, and abilities. The space does not seek to function identically for everyone; rather, it allows individuals to engage with it according to their own conditions. As a result, there is no single correct route or fixed way of experiencing the museum.
Following the experiential sequence, visitors are directed toward shared spaces of production and gathering. Comprising a café, library, workshop, and event areas, this zone functions as a threshold where individual experiences transform into social interaction. The project argues that differences are not divisive, but can form a shared ground for collective engagement and coexistence
