THE INTERSECTIN
Kayseri Cumhuriyet Square is a living showcase of the city, beautifully layering centuries of historical, religious, and commercial heritage. Developed this semester, the Transportation Hub project aims to seamlessly integrate into this rich context by connecting existing public transit networks while creating a vibrant, multi-functional public space where people can pause, gather, and interact.
During my site analysis, I observed that while the square acts as a historical vitrine, contemporary Kayseri’s dynamic commercial identity often recedes into the background. My design response focuses on transforming this transit point into a lively urban hub. By weaving shopping and daily routines into the fabric of the station, the project invites commuters and shoppers alike to experience a more animated, active public life.
The architectural language establishes a delicate dialogue with the historical context. To respect and maintain the continuous, massive wall effect of the historical castle walls without disrupting its presence, I introduced a lightweight glass volume. This inviting transparency creates a striking contrast, sparking curiosity and drawing pedestrians inside.
The spatial journey guides users underground via cascading stairs. A grand atrium at the core serves as the main spine, flooding the lower levels with natural light. Strategically placed glass surfaces on the southern facade capture the high-quality southern sun, channeling daylight deep into the subterranean floors.
To accommodate the roof openings designed for light penetration while ensuring a comfortable environment, the entrance level is recessed to the -4.00 meter datum. This subterranean positioning offers a distinct climatic advantage: it shields users from the square’s harsh wind conditions, creating a sheltered, thermally comfortable, and luminous urban oasis. Ultimately, this transportation hub bridges Kayseri’s deeply rooted commercial tradition with modern mobility needs through a corridor of light reaching from below the ground up to the sky.
