URBAN CIVIC CORE / NEHİR DOĞAN

The concept of this project is rooted in the idea of the public square as a place of gathering, interaction, and urban identity. The existing square within the site lacks a clear spatial definition and functions primarily as a transit area rather than a destination. In response, the project aims to redefine and strengthen the square by creating a secondary public space that works together with the existing one, forming a connected network of social and cultural activities.

Historically, successful squares are characterized by clear boundaries, human-scale environments, and active edges that encourage people to stay rather than simply pass through. Inspired by these qualities, the proposed square is spatially defined through a combination of existing historic buildings, tree lines, and a canopy system that guides movement across the site. These elements establish visual and physical boundaries while creating a comfortable and recognizable public realm.

To further emphasize the square as a distinct urban place, portions of it are lowered by two and four meters below ground level. This intervention creates a stronger sense of enclosure and identity while maintaining visual connections with the surrounding city. The canopy system acts as both a wayfinding element and a unifying architectural feature, connecting the two squares and organizing pedestrian circulation. In addition, surrounding streets are narrowed and sections of the bazaar are pedestrianized, allowing vehicle access only where necessary. This strategy prioritizes pedestrians and transforms the area into a safer and more inviting public environment.

A key objective of the project is to encourage people to remain within the square and actively engage with the space. For this reason, the transportation hub incorporates a series of studios, workshops, and creative learning spaces dedicated to music, dance, art, and other community-oriented activities. These spaces continuously generate content that extends into the public realm through weekly performances, exhibitions, and events held in the square. As a result, the square becomes an ever-changing environment shaped by the participation of its users.

In addition, the tram line and stations are relocated underground to remove the physical barrier they currently create within the site. By placing transit infrastructure below ground, uninterrupted pedestrian movement is achieved, allowing the square to function as a cohesive and accessible public space. The project ultimately transforms the site from a fragmented transit zone into a vibrant urban destination where mobility, creativity, and community life intersect.
