CONFLUENCE
Confluence is conceived as a transportation hub that extends beyond the conventional role of mobility infrastructure and transforms into a vibrant third place within the city. Developed through behavioral mapping and observation studies conducted in the surrounding square, the project responds to patterns of social, necessary, and optional activities observed throughout different times of the day. These findings informed the creation of a series of spatial voids designed to attract people into the building and provide opportunities for interaction, production, learning, and cultural exchange.
The project is organized around a sequence of interconnected spaces, including performance voids, production voids, commercial voids, and artistic voids. Rather than prescribing specific activities, these spaces offer flexible environments where users can shape their own experiences. Accessible terraces introduce vegetation into the building and create elevated public spaces that encourage relaxation, gathering, and engagement with nature while allowing daylight to penetrate deeper levels of the structure.
At the heart of the project, a vertical gallery connects the upper public realm to the underground circulation network. Seminar spaces, exhibition areas, and community-oriented programs are distributed throughout the building, fostering continuous interaction between education, culture, and mobility. Exposed concrete walls are intentionally left available for public graffiti, allowing users to actively contribute to the evolving identity of the building.
Underground levels accommodate a range of creative and cultural functions. Music rooms connected to the amphitheater support performances and rehearsals, while instrument exhibitions activate the ground floor above. Similarly, toy-making workshops extend into exhibition and retail spaces, creating a direct relationship between production and display. A light-based color exhibition beneath the central volume transforms natural illumination into an immersive spatial experience.
Confluence further strengthens urban connectivity through its multi-level transportation network, linking the underground bazaar, vehicular underpass system, and future tram line. By merging movement, culture, creativity, and public life, the project becomes a dynamic urban catalyst where infrastructure and social interaction converge.
