TESSERA: Spatializing the Modular Transition Hub

TESSERA reimagines the traditional transit terminal not merely as an infrastructure point, but as an active urban catalyst fusing architectural theory with rigorous spatial choreography. Situated within a complex multi-modal fabric, the project adopts a strict 1×1-meter rational pixel module as its foundational design language, translating conceptual keywords into spatial conditions. By establishing a continuous transition from subterranean platforms to the elevated public plaza, TESSERA seamlessly bridges the threshold between the city’s fast-paced transit network and slower pedestrian interaction zones.

The structural logic relies on a dramatic material contrast balancing tectonic permanence with industrial lightness. The expansive roof canopy features an integrated steel space frame girder system acting as a pixelated climatic envelope. Adopting a strict solid-void dialect, it combines modular precast concrete pavers for insulated public squares with multi-layered, walkable structural glass pixels above critical circulation nodes. This allows dynamic shafts of daylight to pierce down a 15-meter vertical lightwell, illuminating the deepest subterranean levels. Supporting this massive frame are two monumental exposed raw concrete columns. These feature an iconic, geometric hourglass form—tapering from a large base to a 1×1-meter core, and expanding back to a 4×4-meter capital to connect with major space frame nodes—effectively mitigating buckling while anchoring the hub to the topography.

Inside the subterranean canyon, the spatial choreography optimizes user flows entirely through high-efficiency mechanical systems, utilizing an integrated escalator chain and elevator cores to maximize commuter velocity. The vertical circulation is anchored by a single staircase located exclusively at the main entrance, seamlessly integrated with a central elevator. To preserve the absolute fluidity of the open-plan lower realm—which functions as a pixelated gathering field embedded with vegetation and monolithic concrete benches—this main staircase avoids ground-level columns. Instead, it is structurally supported via a post-tensioned waffle slab system anchored directly into the backing concrete shear wall, eliminating ground-level clutter and keeping the main transition hub completely liberated.
