WOVEN GROUND / Serkan Keçeli

WOVEN GROUND is designed as a community-focused educational center that draws on the heritage of carpet weaving and is shaped around shared learning experiences. Located in Kayseri, the project aims to reinterpret the region’s traditional craft culture through a contemporary architectural language and to establish a strong connection between education, production, and public life.

The program includes workshops, exhibition spaces, educational facilities, social gathering areas, and open courtyards. These spaces allow users to experience the production process while also fostering interaction with the local community. The visual connections between semi-open spaces and functions enhance a sense of accessibility while encouraging collective participation. The continuous circulation system guides visitors through the different layers of learning, making the educational process visible and interactive.

The architectural form was inspired by the shapes of nearby buildings on the site, and a fragmented structure was employed. The volumes, which begin below ground level, feature walkable rooftops. The material selections and spatial organization evoke the rhythm and texture of traditional carpet-weaving patterns, establishing a connection between the past and the present.

Ultimately, WOVEN GROUND aims to provide an inclusive environment that brings together craftsmanship, education, and social life while preserving cultural memory; it seeks to transform architecture into a platform for collaborative creation and cultural continuity.
