Architectural Context & Urban Memory  

Situated at the critical intersection of Kayseri’s historical core, flanked by the monumental 12th century Cami-i Kebir and the archaeological remains of the Danishmend Medrese, G-LEX emerges as a socio-technical bridge between urban memory and contemporary production. Rather than treating the site as a static museum context, the design intervention conceptualizes it as a “Living Palimpsest.” Driven by the necessity to reactivate a vacant urban void, the building maintains a respectful dialogue with the historical silhouette of the city by limiting its above-ground volume to just two floors (+5.60m). It then expands its functional depth vertically by sinking the primary civic and production layers into the -4.00m and -7.20m subterranean strata.  

Programmatic Narrative & Circular Loop 

G-LEX adopts gastronomy as its primary medium, recognizing it as the most resilient and active form of Kayseri’s living intangible heritage. Moving beyond a conventional public venue, the project establishes a self-sustainable culinary loop that seamlessly links technology, education, and communal experience. The functional layout is strategically zoned to optimize this productive loop: 

• Production & Innovation: The +4.20m level features the Agro-Hub (Soilless Agri), a dedicated technological laboratory for hydroponic local production, supported by Cooperative and Meeting Offices.  

• Experience & Consumption: Adjacent to the agricultural hub, the Kayseri Cuisine Restaurant, featuring an Open Kitchen and a Local Handmade Kitchen, allows visitors to directly taste local crops while facing the historical ruins.  

• Education & Civic Engagement: Descending to the Basement Floor Plan (-2.80m), the program shifts toward a tiered Governor’s Hub for public forums, a multi-functional Main Hall, and a state of the art Culinary Workshop for traditional learning.  

Spatial Permeability The massing is defined by a strategic V-shaped fissure at the ground level (0.00m). This architectural void creates an inviting threshold, funneling pedestrian traffic from the dense local markets directly into a public courtyard and down into the Sunken Agora. Through mirrored facade choices that reflect the surrounding ancient stone masonry and a structured geometry, G-LEX successfully transforms a silent archaeological void into an active urban motor for future sustainable praxis.
